What is a coaching circle?

A coaching circle is a small group of 5-8 circle members plus a facilitator who meet face-to-face monthly over a period of 6 months. During each session, at least two circle members have the opportunity to be coached by the rest of the circle members on a work challenge or issue that is current to the issue holder.

As the circle members ask more probing questions, the issue holder is encouraged to dig deeper to find answers and overcome challenges.

The method used is based on action learning. Founded in the 1950s, action learning is a proven method in the world of professional development. It’s all about transformation for both the individual and the organisation, and has earned a well-respected place on many management, leadership and professional-development programmes.

What's the benefit of being part of a coaching circle?

Being an Agile Coach, Scrum Master, Agile Manager or Product Owner can often be quite a lonely place. People in such roles often spend the majority of their time supporting others whilst themselves feeling unsupported. A coaching circle is a safe place to explore their fears and concerns. Being asked probing questions from circle members allows the issue holder to work through problems that often they're not able to work through on their own.

Who facilitates the coaching circle?

The circle is facilitated by Ryan Behrman, an experienced, certified agile coach and facilitator, and certified action learning facilitator (see organiser description on this page).


Agile Coaches, Scrum Masters, Agile Managers, Product Owners. The circle is also suitable for team members who want to move into a coaching role or to include more of a coaching style in their work, or for any role within the agile landscape.


It is a pre-requisite that you have at least a grounding in the basics of Agile, and at least 6 months' experience as an Agile practitioner.

Trainer Bio

Ryan Behrman, MBA, Management 3.0, Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), Scrum, KanbanRyan Behrman

Ryan's work is about facilitating, consulting, coaching and training teams and mentoring individuals to work more effectively and productively together. His approach is a pragmatic blend of listening, consulting, mentoring, training, and facilitation.

He's an experienced trainer and facilitator and runs regular public and in-house trainings and workshops in Management 3.0, Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), Scrum, Kanban, and other lean and agile ways of working. 

Ryan holds an MBA from Warwick Business School where he wrote his dissertation comparing agile methods to traditional methods of management and workflow.

He's a trained coach with Coaching Development Ltd and subsequently served as a mentor on their programme. He also coaches clients individually at his residence in south east London and over Skype. 

Ryan's certified in action learning facilitation with Action Learning Centre.

He's worked in the UK, South Africa, Canada, Spain, Poland and Germany with industries spanning retail, supply chain, publishing, government, travel, cloud software, education, investment banking, wealth management, and FinTech. 

Ryan is a regular speaker at Agile conferences, and is co-organiser of the London Management 3.0 meetup group.
