Unique journeys to coaching

Introduction

This page is a celebration and acknowledgement of the varied journeys that our students have taken to becoming a coach. From those who started out with no coaching experience, right through the spectrum to those who had informally coached for some time.

With professional backgrounds as diverse as education, pharmaceuticals, finance, PR, fashion, not for profit, HR, property and law, the list goes on and on... each made their own very personal journey.

Here, some of our students share their coaching stories with you...

James Farrell
'The Nature Coach'

My career before coaching was all about the environment. I spent 30 years working for a wide range of organisations in nature, environment and sustainability roles, where I relied on being a directing, pace-setting leader. It was becoming an internal coach, and completing some masterclasses with Coaching Development, where I realised the danger of relying too heavily on these leadership styles! I also felt a strong calling to help leaders do better work, from a place of greater inner peace and wellbeing - especially work that makes this planet a better place.

This was driven home for me personally during my Professional Coaching Skills course, when I failed to secure an executive manager role I was after. I used my coaching and self-development time to take another look at my career trajectory, and ask myself whether I was heading in the right direction. Answer - no! During PCS I created a new five year plan, which took me to Developing Mastery, and the establishment of two of my own companies: The Human Nature Partnership and The Natural Coaching Company. In the latter I have been able to united my twin loves - nature, and coaching.

I now do a lot of thinking and writing about coaching in partnership with nature, which I call ’Nature Based Coaching’. This field is really growing - with international interest and the support of major coaching providers such as Henley Business School. More clients are asking to work ‘outdoors’, and loving the benefits for increased calm, connection and creativity. I remember coaching in Highbury Fields during my Certificate - and I’m so glad there will be face to face courses again soon.

I focus on helping leaders navigate major transitions in life. This is commonly about a change of role or career, or a relationship breakdown. It is often quite existential work. I also specialise in coaching ADHD adults, and leaders who are suffering from poor mental health. This is deep work which can be quite therapeutic (though it is coaching, not therapy). I think it is testament to the philosophy and practice at Coaching Development that graduates are able to work in this way.

As well as my private clients, I also provide associate work for a major US-based workplace coaching and therapy provider, which is extremely diverse and rewarding. And I have recently launched a new training programme for Coaching with Nature, called ’Nature Based Coaching Skills’.

I’m left with a deep sense of gratitude for everyone at Coaching Development. My time learning with these inspirational folk has changed my life, and created big ripples for those around me. If you’re thinking about becoming a coach, I couldn’t recommend Coaching Development more highly.
